Savoury Nutritional Flakes, or Nutritional Yeast as they are sometimes referred to, are packed with nutrition. They are high in B Vitamins and other trace minerals, a source of Zinc, and one of the only vegan sources of Vitamin B12, a complete bioavailable source of protein and a natural source of fibre.
How are Savoury Nutritional Flakes made? Savoury Nutritional Flakes are made from a single-celled organism fungi called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae grown on GMO-free molasses. They are harvested, washed and dried with heat to 'deactivate' them and then rolled to form flakes.
Savoury Nutritional Flakes or 'yeast flakes' should not be confused with traditional baking yeast as they contain no alcohol and won't cause or exacerbate candida or leaven baked goods.

Savoury Nutritional Flakes are often used as a vegan substitute to cheese due to their rich savoury flavour. Sprinkle on popcorn, stir into mashed potatoes, use anywhere in place of parmesan cheese, add a tablespoon or 2 to your dishes to add a cheesy flavour without the dairy.
Are the B vitamins and Folate in my product synthetically fortified?
Nutra Organics Vegan Nutritional Yeast Flakes are fortified with a multitude of B vitamins, however these vitamins are not necessarily synthetic.
To clarify this further, we’d just like to elaborate on the mechanics of Nutritional Yeast processing that applies to ALL nutritional yeasts available on the market here in Australia.
The flakes are initially fortified with B vitamins in the initial stages of growth, for example; Folic Acid, .
From there the yeast grows, organically binds too and digests the Folic Acid and other B vitamins, converting Folic Acid to Folate and the other various inorganic forms of B vitamins into their organic forms. As the yeast grows it then proliferates these organic vitamins to create a naturally nutrient rich product. Interestingly nutritional yeast is one of the only vegan sources of B12 which is otherwise impossible to obtain from a plant-based diet but is necessary for energy production, immunity and general health.
So although the yeast is initially fortified with vitamins, the organic binding, digestion and proliferation of these nutrients by the yeast changes them from an inorganic form to an organic form.
That said, as this involves an organic metabolic process by the yeast, we cannot 100% guarantee that there are no minute traces of the initial vitamins left in the product, therefore if you suffer a severe intolerance to fortified products, we recommend avoiding this product.
Does Nutritional Yeast have any effect on Candida infection? And what does “deactivated” mean?
The simple answer to this is no.
Nutritional Yeast is derived from the yeast known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This yeast is a non-pathogenic yeast that may displace pathogenic yeasts such as Candida spp. within the gastrointestinal tract and has beneficial nutritional effects rather than the undesirable ones that Candida spp. is notorious for.
Further to this, it’s important to note that nutritional yeast is deactivated - meaning through fast heat treatment, the yeast is essentially killed off and can no longer proliferate or grow. Therefore by consuming nutritional yeast you are not consuming a yeast that will grow and populate your gut.
For persons allergic to yeasts, it is still important to avoid nutritional yeast altogether, however in the instance of mild intolerance, this kind of deactivated yeast is usually well tolerated.
I bought 2 bags, one for work and one for home 2 weeks ago. The one at home is nearly empty and someone keeps using the one at work so also nearly gone.
This has such a great savory, cheesy flavour. I sprinkle it on some many things, my favorite to sprinkle it on avocado toast. Way tastier than a supermarket branded one I’ve tried.
Hoping to make some vegan cheeze soon with this for my lactose intolerant partner with this but tastes yummy sprinkled on roast veggies.
